Over the course of her career, Jolie Holland has processed a century of American songwriter culture consisting of jazz, blues, soul and rock and roll into a stew that cannot be classified in a category.
Having all of these songs in your head and heart for the past ten decades is her burden and gift. It immerses directly in the pathos of a song, based on singers such as Mavis Staples, Al Green or Tom Waits. At first, the encounter with her songs is challenging, sometimes worried, but as so many poets and rockers showed us (from Dante Alighieri to William Blake to Sylvia Plath and Patti Smith), the nice thing is often.
As could be clearly seen on her first recordings, Holland is apparently not afraid of the truth, and there is no emotional core that she cannot reach in her singing. In fact, it thrives in the glowing center of a musical composition, in all its strange and brutal details.
Jolie Holland's current album "Haunted Mountain" was created in close cooperation with the friend and musician fellow musician Buck Mek and contains five of the two musicians: Songs co -produced inside, including the breathtaking Title Track.
