The House of Music at a glance

Vienna is considered the world capital of music. But there's only one place where young people can explore sounds, trace the footsteps of the stars of Viennese Classical music, feel the tones on the sound wave, and even conduct orchestras themselves: at the House of Music.

The museum, which also hosts concerts and rents out event spaces, aims to break down cultural barriers and raise awareness of music, explains director Simon Posch: “We are a place of lively exchange that opens up new avenues to music. People should come to us curious, return to their daily lives with a melody on their lips, and take something away for their lives. Culture and music can be a powerful force for connection and inspiration. We want to unleash this power with our wide range of offerings.”

Since its opening in 2000 – five years after Vienna Holding took over operations – visitor numbers have more than doubled to over 270,000 people per year. Many guests are tourists and schoolchildren. However, most visitors come from Austria, followed by Germany and the USA.

In Puebla, Mexico, a similar museum was built following a licensing agreement (open from 2015 to 2025). A collaboration began in China in 2023, where a sound museum was also built and officially opened in 2024. Furthermore, the House of Music is an ambassador and partner of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, which introduces children to music and provides them with access to instruments. The House of Music's honorary president is the renowned conductor Zubin Mehta.
