Johann Strauss II and the Vienna Philharmonic

To mark the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss II's birth (1825–1899), the House of Music is dedicating a new special exhibition to the "Waltz King":
"Johann Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic – A tribute on his 200th birthday" .

This temporary exhibition illuminates the special artistic connection between Johann Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic. Rare documents are presented, including programs and papers relating to the gala concert celebrating his 50th anniversary as conductor in 1894 , as well as records of two performances with the Imperial Court Opera Orchestra in 1873 and 1877 .

Particularly impressive are photographs with personal dedications to orchestra members such as Jakob Grün and Willibald Hengg , which testify to the mutual appreciation between the composer and the musicians.

The special exhibition can be seen until March 31, 2026 in the area of the Vienna Philharmonic in the House of Music.
