On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss Jr. (1825–1899), the House of Music is dedicating a new special exhibition to the “Waltz King”:
“Johann Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic – A Homage to the 200th Birthday .
This temporary exhibition explores the special artistic connection between Johann Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic. Rare documents are presented, including programs and documents from the gala concert celebrating his 50th anniversary as conductor in 1894 , as well as recordings of two performances with the Imperial and Royal Court Opera Orchestra in 1873 and 1877 .
Particularly impressive are photographs with personal dedications to orchestra members such as Jakob Grün and Willibald Hengg , which testify to the mutual appreciation between the composer and the musicians.
The special exhibition can be seen until March 31, 2026, in the Vienna Philharmonic of the House of Music.
