Franz Schubert - His life and his work in the city of Vienna

The composer Franz Schubert reinvented the song in Vienna. He was a romantic with depth that touched people with his music.

Franz Schubert knew how to write like no other, touching songs and thus hit the heart of his listeners: inside.

It was considered reserved and modest. He often seemed intended and lived withdrawn in his own world of music and thoughts. Nevertheless, Franz Schubert was a lively and humorous person in the society of his closest friends who was known for his deep friendships. Growing up in modest circumstances, he determined his plan to become composer and musician - although he was noticed for a long time. The groundbreaking composer of romance left an impressive legacy. However, you shouldn't imagine your life too romantically.

When Franz Schubert was born in a small house on Nußdorferstrasse on January 31, 1797, Vienna is an uncomfortable place. The sanitary and medical conditions are catastrophic. There is hardly any clean drinking water, which caused diseases such as tuberculosis and cholera. Many people suffer from malnutrition. The rents are high, so that large families also live closely together. Schubert's father Franz Theodor, a teacher, only has two rooms. He uses one of them as a school area, in the other the family lives - of a total of 14 children, only five survive. The mother soon dies. Death and poverty are one of the childhood experiences of little French. Fortunately, there is something that will upgrade him: music.

School abort: born to compose!

Music is made at home. The father organizes string quartet and soon Franz can play on the viola. He also gets violins and organ lessons. And he sings well. At the age of 11, he was accepted into the city convict as a court boy. The court champion Antonio Salieri recognizes his talent and promotes him. At school, Schubert Lauter has a one - only in religion a four. Like the other composers of the Viennese classic, he has his problems with God's soil staff. Only later will he search for something higher and write the most beautiful hymns.

At the age of 15 he leaves school: he has learned enough and can now do everything he had to be able to do: "I was born to compose." The man - short legs, brown curls, round glasses, nickname "Schwammerl" - is small, Rather shy. But that's a announcement. The fact that he only briefly works as a auxiliary teacher for the father leads to a dismantling. He has to move out and now lives with friends because he can hardly achieve any significant income with his compositions. He also demonstrates what he composed and written. These evenings are known as "Schubertiaden".

Art and culture in the small circle

He is not looking for the big appearance in front of thousands of people. After the Vienna Congress of 1815, which ended the deprived time of the Napoleonic Wars, people want to rest, withdraw and strive for nature. Art and culture bloom in the small circle in Biedermeier. "It was a high level of house music," explains Elisabeth Albrecht, head of the music placement in the Haus der Musik. “Schubert had a great talent for coordinating text and music and combining it in an effective way. He also gave the piano more meaning and made it a narrative voice from the accompanying instrument. He raised the genus song to a new level. "

German trade fair as a small revolution

Schubert composed a thousand works in a period of only 15 years - with an iron discipline, sitting at a table, without a piano. He had no one. Schubert was extremely productive and composed over 600 songs, including masterpieces such as the "Erlkönig" and "The Trout".

In addition to his songs, Schubert also wrote symphonies, chamber music, 32 piano sonatas and touching church music, which is still being sung today. In his German mass he summed up the longing for spirituality of his time in the song "Where should I turn". It is a small revolution that he appeals to God directly, in German and not in Latin. His unfinished symphony No. 8 and the Great C major symphony are among its most important orchestral works.

No desire for appearances

But Schubert didn't have to live long. He had become corpulent and drank a lot. He got the venereal disease of syphilis, which made him difficult. "I feel like the most unfortunate, most miserable person in the world," he wrote to his friend Leopold Kupelwieser . He did not get the place of the Vice Capell Master at the Imperial Court Chapel, which he applied in 1826. For his first public concert on March 26, 1828, which was a great success, he had to be persuaded. Numerous songs and piano works had now also been printed.

Once he is said to have been in love, but Theresa Grob had to marry a master baker. Franz Schubert, who should only be given a lot of fame, died in Vienna on November 19, 1828. He was 31 years old.
