A new chapter in music history: Opening of the House of Music in Yanguan, China
At the end of November 2024, another significant chapter in cultural cooperation between Austria and China was opened: the House of Music in Yangon, southwest of Shanghai. This unique project brings Viennese musical tradition to Asia in an impressive way, creating a cultural bridge that spans continents.
A vision becomes reality
The House of Music in Yanguan is more than just a museum – it's an immersive experience for music lovers, showcasing Vienna's rich musical history across approximately 5,000 square meters with interactive highlights and state-of-the-art technology. The project was realized after several years of planning and construction in close collaboration with WU Promotion, one of Asia's leading concert promoters, and the Dingdu Group.
The grand opening took place in the presence of high-ranking figures: Simon Posch, Director of the Vienna House of Music; Dr. Andreas Riecken, Austrian Ambassador to China; Jiatong Wu of WU Promotion; and investor Xianghong Chen led the memorable event. The celebration was complemented by a video message from Peter Hanke, City Councillor of Vienna, which underscored the international significance of the project.
Music as a bridge between cultures
“Music has the power to connect people and build cultural bridges,” emphasized Simon Posch at the opening. This vision comes alive in the new House of Music in Yangon: It unites Viennese musical tradition with Chinese culture, thus creating a space for cultural dialogue and exchange. The design, developed by Chalabi Architects & Partners, combines classical elements with modern architecture, resulting in a unique symbiosis of tradition and innovation.
An international success story
The House of Music in Yangon is the second international expansion of the Viennese original. A first licensed project opened in Puebla, Mexico, in 2015, and successfully reopened in October 2024 after a pandemic-related closure. These international projects impressively demonstrate how the Vienna brand as the capital of music is gaining global significance.
WU Promotion, a key player in cultural exchange between Asia and the world for over 30 years, sees enormous potential in the collaboration with the House of Music: "We want to open more museums in China and beyond, modeled on the Viennese example," explains Jiatong Wu.
Vienna as a global cultural brand
The House of Music in Yangon strengthens Vienna's position as a music capital and brings Vienna's cultural heritage closer to an international audience. The Viennese musical tradition, renowned for masters such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss, is now presented in an interactive and modern way in Yangon. Visitors can experience the diversity of Viennese musical history and be inspired by the magic of sound.
A milestone for culture
The opening of the House of Music in Yanguan is not only a cultural milestone, but also a symbolic sign of the power of music to connect people and nations. It is a place where history and modernity, East and West, are united, demonstrating that music is a universal language that knows no boundaries.
With this new museum, the House of Music continues its international success story – and invites visitors from all over the world to experience the fascination of music up close.
